At fortysomething, straight-laced Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is living the dream – good job, nice house, great kids and marriage to his high school sweetheart. But when Cal learns that his wife, Emily (Julianne Moore), has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his “perfect” life quickly unravels. Worse, in today’s single world, Cal, who hasn’t dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-smooth. Now spending his free evenings sulking alone at a local bar, the hapless Cal is taken on as wingman and protégé to handsome, thirtysomething player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling). In an effort to help Cal get over his wife and start living his life, Jacob opens Cal’s eyes to the many options before him: flirty women, manly drinks and a sense of style that can’t be found at Supercuts or The Gap. Cal and Emily aren’t the only ones looking for love in what might be all the wrong places: Cal’s 13-year-old son, Robbie (Jonah Bobo), is crazy about his 17-year-old babysitter, Jessica (Analeigh Tipton), who harbors a crush on Cal. And despite Cal’s makeover and his many new conquests, the one thing that can’t be made over is his heart, which seems to keep leading him back to where he began.

crazy, stupid, love

My Review:

First, I must say (which has nothing to do with the actual movie) that I chose to watch this on Blu-ray.  Wow, they aren’t kidding when they say there’s a difference.  It was such a crisp, clear picture!

Okay, on to the movie… I went into this with high expectations due to the all-star cast.  A few of the main characters are my favorite actors.  After watching the film, I can say that I was impressed by the new faces I saw, too.  Excellent casting in this movie!  On a side note, it is a personal mission of mine to watch every film that Ryan Gosling has ever set foot in.  Ahem… moving on.

Find It Here

From the moment that Steve Carell does a tuck-n-roll out of a moving vehicle, I knew I was going to be in for a treat.  This movie is witty, smart, funny, honest, and has situations that everyone can relate to.  No matter what your current relationship status is, there is bound to be something in this storyline that you find familiar.  Let’s face it, love is crazy and stupid!

There are a few different love stories going on in this movie and they eventually all tie in.  I don’t want to reveal too much, but I was definitely surprised at some of the connections.  Here’s where I say that everyone can relate because there is teenage love, married life, and the dating scene.  I have now been through each one of those stages so I found every scenario hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time.

If you are looking for a romantic comedy, I highly suggest this movie.  It takes a lot for me to actually laugh out loud in a movie and I did several times during this one.  Even the actors that typically star in dramas or action films were excellent in their comedic roles.

  1. This sounds like a cute movie…and I love Ryan Gosling too! 🙂

  2. My husband and I watched this movie last night and really enjoyed it. I loved the twist at the end! And it never hurts when Ryan Gosling takes off his shirt in a movie 🙂

  3. I love that you did a review of this movie. I have been looking to do my own as well. I am not a romantic film kinda lady. In fact, The Notebook (also a Ryan Gosling film) is my mortal enemy! lol. But I loved this movie. Maybe because I enjoyed the actors (Emma Stone is my new favorite actress), or because I am now at a point in my life where finding love is important, etc, etc. Either way, I adored it! Really a good, well written, interesting movie.

  4. My boyfriend actually took me to see this one and we BOTH really liked it 🙂
It was like a non-stop laugh fest throughout the whole movie-And I COMPLETELY agree about the Ryan Gosling goal….Meeee tooo xD
