National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry

If you are still looking for something unique this holiday season, or something new for your children’s or grandchildren’s bookshelf – here is a beautiful book for you! Named one of the top books of 2012 by The New York Public Library, The National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry compiled by J. Patrick Lewis features real life photos from National Geographic paired with poems. The poems are from many different poets, including Robert Frost, Benjamin Franklin, and Emily Dickinson, as well as more modern children’s poets. It is a beautiful book with full color/full page photos and hardcover. Product received for review. Post contains affiliate links.

National Geographic Book of Animal Poetry

The book is sorted out with winged ones, water ones, strange ones, noisy ones, etc- and the poems are matched to the pictures by topic or animal. My favorite section was probably the “Welcome to the World” full of super cute baby animals! It is fun to see the animals in the pictures come alive, either through story telling poets OR factual poems about what the animals are like. I really like that they are REAL pictures and artfully done instead of illustrations made to fit the story. The poems are also a great way to teach children about form and literature with everything from limericks, short lyrics or shaped poems.

The book is great for at home or in the classroom.  It is made for children ages 4-6, but I think it is great for many ages depending on the children’s interests.
